The Reluctant Teenage Reader How Parents Can Awaken the Reader Within eBook Dorothea Carney

Dorothea Carney, a middle-school special education teacher, understands how to assess students' reading strengths and weaknesses, and she willingly shares the approaches she carries out in her own classroom. Proficient readers use certain strategies, she tells us, and she describes the factors that impact students' reading comprehension, offering guidance to parents as well as fellow teachers. Because many of her students want to avoid reading and writing, she engages them with topics based on their interests. A reluctant reader loves football? Ms. Carney finds books about the sport itself or about football players. Another student loves cars. Books are out there. Find them, Ms. Carney urges, show teenagers that they are not alone in their interests. Ms. Carney listens to her students and observes their behavior as she teaches reading strategies; if she sees that a strategy isn't working for a student, she'll abandon it. When students are ready, she guides them to read about other topics. She advises parents and teachers to be kind, patient, and understanding so that students will feel safe to take the risk to read and write. The student-centered approaches Ms. Carney describes provide the bridge struggling readers need to become readers and writers.

Just finished reading Dorothea Carney's "The Reluctant Teenage Reader." It is a first-rate piece of work. The author writes with great insight and shows parents some easy ways to motivate their teenagers to read independently. She also gives some valuable tips on how to help struggling readers. Highly recommended.
A well written and easy to read book that has good info for the parent of a teen who is dragging their feet around books. I caught this one on loan from a friend who thought it would help my child's issues.

Dorothea Carney has an obvious gift for understanding the complex difficulties often associated with furthering teenage literacy, and this is certainly a "must read" for anyone trying to overcome similar challenges.
I have had the pleasure of working with Dorothea Carney for the past 10 years. As a school psychologist, I am well aware of the importance of creating a warm and nurturing environment in order to create a lifelong love of education. Ms. Carney's approach is incredibly effective in the development of strong and lasting reading skills. This book is an important addition to any library.
This is a great quick read for parents, but can also be a valuable resource for teachers, especially those who are not sure how to motivate struggling readers to read independently. Written in simple, parent-friendly language, the book presumes no knowledge on the part of the reader, and walks us through every chapter with clear explanations. You won't be disappointed!
As a reading teacher for the last 15 years, I loved reading this book!!! I gained additional ideas to use for the upcoming school year!! I have had many parents ask me how to get their child to read and write more, and now I will recommend this book for them. This book contains all the necessary secrets to make reading and writing with your child a SUCCESS!! I especially loved the stories about her former students!!! The author also includes additional reading material and websites for the reluctant reader. This book is not just for teenagers, I use many of these strategies with my elementary children. Thank you for writing such a GREAT resource for parents and teachers!!
Ms Carney provides an excellent service by going to the heart of the matter for parents by viewing the "reluctant teenager's" need to be that of "awakening." She then proceeds clearly and reasonably to address parents about ways this can be accomplished. Her reference to a variety of motivators such as starting with the teenagers interests, choosing reading material which they can readily understand, provide material which they can successfully and enjoyably understand are in line with solid motivational theory, yet, Carney wisely dispenses her knowledge of these matters, with direct, clear, and interesting language. In short, teenagers are awakened to read by confronting those things in which they are interested, successfully understanding what they are reading about, and finding encouragement through successful understanding, and further developing an interest. These accomplishments, once experienced, become self-motivators for teenagers to continue to read. In "The Reluctant Reader" parents are given the impetus to awaken these motivations in their teenagers.
